Pathway between building and trees on the Salem campus

Triad Business Journal Recognizes Salem Academy Alum Kalin Griffin

The Triad Business Journal recently profiled Kalin Griffin Bostwick (A’01) as a Leader in Diversity.  Kalin serves as vice president of inclusion & engagement at Novant Health in Winston-Salem.  She is a first-generation American, born in Columbia, South Carolina to parents who migrated from The Bahamas and Barbados.

The staff at the Triad Business Journal said Kalin was selected as a Leader in Diversity because, “She is the driving force behind the way inclusion is seen, experienced and prioritized within the organization. Under her leadership, the company expanded its diversity, equity and inclusion base to cast a wider, more diverse net for talent. She hired a team of recruiters that better reflect both the patients and communities the health care organization serves.

“She continues the transformation of the people and culture team to respond to feedback from patients and team members. In the wake of the pandemic and the nursing shortage, she created a pipeline with the inclusion of wrap-around services for international, registered nurse hires. She is a recipient of the North Carolina Healthcare Association’s Diverse Healthcare Mentorship award.”

In the profile, Triad Business Journal reporter Carl Wilson asked Kalin her advice on how to initiate authentic conversations and action on diversity, equity and inclusion. “Expect to stumble on the inclusion and belonging journey and anticipate the tools and resources that you will use to lead with courage,” Kalin said. “I have empathy for international talent that relocates to the U.S. in pursuit of better opportunities. I recognize how this experience can diversify a team by strengthening key team dynamics such as adaptability, hard work ethic and resilience.”

In the story, Kalin shared three recommendations that Triad leaders can do to make this region a better place for all members of our community:

  • Start from where you are—regardless of whether you possess a designated title—in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging space.
  • Participate in both formal and informal mentorship circles.
  • Attend events hosted by groups that do not share your same intersectionality to gain broader appreciation for all of the diverse people who call the Triad home.
