Salem Academy Students Arrive on Campus for Salem’s 255th Year of Classes

The Salem campus is once again bustling with life and laughter after a quiet summer, as Salem Academy’s 63 students gathered for the school’s annual Opening Chapel service on Tuesday, August 18. 

President Jill Fleuriet welcomed everyone to the service and presided over her first Opening Chapel. The students heard remarks from Head of School Kris Porazzi Sorrells and Academy alumna Vonda Kimble Delawie A’75. Dean of Students Nicole Gatto then read the opening messages, notes of encouragement from Academy alumnae to current students, which are always a highlight of Opening Chapel.

The service concluded with the singing of the Salem Academy and College Alma Mater. As students exited, they received a daisy pin and a note from Dr. Fleuriet with a nod to the line “I dwell in possibility” from the poem by Emily Dickinson she referenced in her welcome address. “I want this year to be about YOUR possibility — your universe, your imagination,” Dr. Fleuriet told the students.

The first day of classes was on August 19, officially beginning Salem’s 255th year of educating girls and women and a new year of possibility for the Academy community.
