Salem Academy and College Shares Winter Weather Plan

Salem Academy and College is actively monitoring winter weather expected to impact the region this weekend and into early next week. With forecasts calling for potential ice accumulation, extremely low temperatures, and possible power outages, the College’s Emergency Operations Response Team has put precautionary measures in place to prioritize the safety and well-being of students, employees, and the broader campus community.

Friday, January 23

Campus operations and classes will continue as normal during the day. After classes conclude, students are encouraged—if feasible—to return home or remain off campus to reduce travel risks and limit on-campus density ahead of potentially hazardous conditions.

Saturday, January 24, and Sunday, January 25

The campus will be closed, and all internal and external events and activities are cancelled.

Students who remain on campus will continue to receive essential support. Food services will remain available with adjusted hours, and Residential Life staff will communicate directly with students regarding expectations, available support, and residence hall updates. Individuals who are not approved to remain on campus should not come to campus during this time.

Monday, January 26, and Tuesday, January 27

All Salem Academy and Salem College classes will be held remotely.

For employees, all non-essential staff are expected to work remotely and should not report to campus. This allows essential personnel to focus on maintaining campus safety. Essential employees should report to work on their normal schedules and communicate with their supervisor if weather-related challenges arise.

The campus will remain closed, and all internal and external activities and events are cancelled. Additional communication will be shared on Monday regarding plans for Wednesday and beyond.

Dining Services

Harvest Table Dining will operate on the following schedule:

• Friday and Saturday: Normal hours

• Sunday–Tuesday: Abbreviated hours

  • Breakfast: 9:00–10:30 a.m.

  • Lunch: 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

  • Dinner: 4:00–6:00 p.m.

Campus Access

The campus will close to external guests and events beginning Friday, January 23, at 11:00 p.m., and will reopen on Wednesday, January 28, at 6:00 a.m., unless otherwise noted in future communications.

Technology Updates

Information Technology will communicate directly with the community regarding any service disruptions. Due to the risk of power outages, some IT systems may be taken offline if necessary. Decisions regarding system availability will be made by mid-day Friday, January 23, and users will be notified accordingly.

Staying Informed and Getting Help

Community members should continue to monitor their Salem email accounts and cell phones for updates. All students and employees are strongly encouraged to ensure they are registered for Salem’s Emergency Alert System to receive timely text and email notifications.
