Hurricane Ian: Important Campus Information

Dear Salem Community:

Salem Academy and College’s Emergency Operations Response Team has been closely monitoring Hurricane Ian. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this historic storm.

Salem Academy and College will suspend operations starting on Friday, September 30 at noon. All classes, institution-sponsored travel and activities will be suspended. The offices of nonessential workers will be closed. The institution will resume regular business operations on Monday, October 3.

CAMPUS EVENTS

While we were excited to celebrate our inaugural All Roads Lead to Salem experience and College Family Weekend, out of an abundance of caution and to follow regional protocol, the Salem Academy and College Emergency Operations Response Team decided to cancel this weekend’s events.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please see the information about the canceled events below.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30

  • The Journey Walk, Campus-wide service project and Block Party are canceled.
  • Fall Lawn is canceled.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1

  • All College Family Weekend events are canceled.
  • The Campus Cookout and Salem Academy Purple and Gold Competition are canceled.
  • The Salem College Soccer Game vs. Methodist University was moved to Thursday, September 29 at 4:30 p.m.

INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION

If you are making the decision to travel before the storm impacts the Winston-Salem area, please monitor the storm path as the areas you plan to travel to may be impacted by the storm.

The Public Safety Department will follow standard operating procedures to assist with emergencies. Please call Public Safety at (336) 917 – 5555 for assistance. If the power goes out and you are unable to reach Public Safety at (336) 917 – 5555, please call the following numbers (336) 345 – 4235 or (336) 399 – 3126.

For members of our community who plan to remain on campus during the storm, please read the important information below.

DINING OPTIONS

Dining options will be provided for students living on campus. Detailed communication will follow from Salem Academy’s Residential Life team and Salem College’s Office of Student Affairs.

RESIDENCE LIFE

Residence Assistants (RA) and campus staff will follow up with you to provide next steps and discuss safety plans.

POWER OUTAGES

In the event there is a power outage, we advise you to shelter-in-place on campus until power can be restored.

FLOODING

If you experience any water damage in residence halls, temporary accommodations will be provided.

Salem College students, please contact your RA or a Residence Life staff member for help.

Salem Academy students, the Salem Academy Residential Life team will follow up with additional safety reminders and next steps.

TREES DOWN

In the event that trees or large limbs obstruct the regular pathway to access the Refectory and other essential locations on campus, we advise that you do not attempt to climb over or remove such debris. Instead, proceed with caution around the obstruction or return to your destinations and contact Public Safety at (336) 345 – 4235 or (336) 399 – 3126.

PARKING

If your vehicle is parked in The Pit or near the athletic fields, please move your vehicle and park in The Salem Academy and College Elberson Fine Arts Center’s parking lot before noon on Friday, September 30.

COMMUNICATIONS

Salem Academy and College will email and text reminders throughout the storm. If you have not already, we advise you to sign up for campus alerts by visiting Salem.BBCportal.com and select “Sign Me Up!” In the event you do not receive campus communications, please contact Public Safety at (336) 345 – 4235 or (336) 399 – 3126 for the latest updates.

SAFETY CHECKLIST

  • Sign up for emergency alerts if you have not already done so by visiting and select “Sign Me Up!”
  • Keep your devices charged. You may also charge your devices in the Rondthaler Science Building in Room 102. In the event there is a power outage, we advise you to shelter-in-place until power can be restored.
  • Locate flashlights and keep them nearby.
  • Stay clear from windows and objects that can move during a storm.
  • Make sure you have water and essential items nearby.
